Alfred Marrable is the designer and maker behind Grendel. Inspired by the poem Beowulf and drawn to the character of Grendel, Alfred started using the pseudonym when he sold paintings and exhibited his street art on the walls of Brighton. At sixteen, he began training as a blacksmith. Alongside working in the forge he worked as a chef. Two very different practices, both honouring the transformative nature of fire.
Alfred first started working in gold after he was motivated by romance to create something truely precious - an 18ct gold ring. Since then he has pursued goldsmithing and became fascinated by the artistry and detail of the traditional techniques. Alfred is largely self taught and always learning new techniques to express himself.
His work in food and drink finds its way into his process as Alfred reflects on what feelings he wants to evoke in the tasting of the food or the wearing of the peice. Zingy and wow? Comfort? Connection to our own history?
He works and lives on a canalboat, exploring the English waterways. The shifting landscapes and connection to nature's rythms is a constant source of inspiration for Alfred.
Alfred spends lots of time looking through jewllery archives, fascinated by the mystery behind the maker and recipient of each peice. He wants to create jewellery that too feels like found treasure - pieces that are bold, a bit raw, and full of story.
